From sci-fi to high-tech fact, the Auto-Config System is already slated to be installed and flown on some of the newest midsize business jets on the market today.
The center-piece of the Auto-Config System features a Cabin Management Module (CMM) equipped with "auto-detect" ports, enabling this unique "black box" to know exactly what, and where, IFE components are located within the aircraft.

The auto-detect ports of the CMM also provide
a "hot-swapping" capability for easy installation and configuration of attached IFE system equipment such as DVD, CD and video cassette players, amplifiers, relays and monitors, along with the associated cabin VIP and headphone switch panels.

Initial setup of the aircraft's entire IFE package may be accomplished using the system's diagnostic program. Amplifier bass and treble trims, along with briefer functions can be optimized from this single point at the CMM, along with other trimable functions including seat selection of all audio/video sources, seat and cabin volume and multi-zone control of VIP switch panels for all functions.

The system's diagnostic program with graphic interface operates from a laptop computer linked to the CMM, providing the installer with the ability to trim all of the attached source and support equipment audio levels for optimal cabin acoustics.
The cabin lighting, temperature and switch panel functions may be debugged with the diagnostic program and a "loopback" test can be preformed on the serial communications cabling as well. The same diagnostics program also provides a direct link back to the manufacturer through an internet connection should the installation technician require assistance.

Flight Information System data is available as an option for switch panel displays or a monitor overlay, and select switch panels for the system feature a display with unique capabilities for ease of visibility over a wide range of lighting conditions and viewing angles. All "Auto-Config" components have been designed for minimum current consumption, cabling and weight, with the system being DO160D certified and HALT tested.

From imagination and science fiction to reality and high-tech fact, IFE systems for business aircraft will more than likely continue to provide a high "WOW!" factor for the passenger. As more services and in-flight entertainment options are offered, there will be an increased need to make IFE systems "smarter," offering a broader spectrum of services and capabilities, all while ensuring the equipment is easy to install, use and maintain. The new Auto-Configuration System from Mid Continent Controls is a step in that direction - the future of In-Flight Entertainment.
